Creative writing 1

Grades 4/5

Tuesdays, 7:00-8:00pm

Teacher: Elizabeth Breau

Start date: 09/13.

No classes on Thanksgiving weekend. Winter break starts on 12/23.

This class will include three interactive units: poetry, writing short stories, and real-world creative writing. Children will learn the basics of rhyme, rhythm, and meter and then write their own. The poetry unit will cover the basics of rhyme and rhythm and give students the opportunity to experiment with different poetic forms. The short story unit will focus on developing characters, settings, and plots, and the real-world creative writing unit will allow students to use their new skills in a variety of creative formats.

"Good teaching," Elizabeth believes, "requires a respectful student-teacher relationship that encourages students to take an active part in their own learning process." When working with students, she encourages an interactive, discussion-oriented process that challenges students to develop their own ideas and to express them both verbally and in writing. Her primary goals are to model intellectual inquiry and to provide students the opportunity to practice critical thinking for themselves, thereby "lighting the fire" that makes learning exciting.

Elizabeth has a doctorate in English and recently won the College Board's Bob Costas Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Writing. Her strong academic background makes her a versatile and creative teacher. In her fifteen years of teaching middle school, high school, and college, she has consistently received excellent evaluations from students, parents, and supervisors. Above all, she seeks to share her love of literature and writing with her students and to make their time in her classroom as productive and positive as possible.
