# Algebra Honors

**Algebra 1 Honors**

Thursday 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Homework Hour: TBA

**Start date**: 09/15.

**No classes** on Thanksgiving weekend. Winter break starts on 12/23.

**Teacher:**Mary Marvin

Assistant Teacher: Timothy Torubarov

**Prerequisites**

This is a rigorous class requiring full command of the topics covered in a school

Algebra 1 course.

To succeed in this class students must be able to work with the following easily

topics: the equation of a line, parallel and perpendicular lines, the slope of a line, absolute

values and inequalities, both 1 and 2-dimensional; they must know how to manipulate

algebraic fractions to solve fractional equations and expressions; complex exponents

will be needed, as well harder problems on distributing, factoring (including some

higher degree equations); and command of quadratic equations, including the

quadratic formula and the graph of a parabola, and its equation as we shift and

stretch it on the coordinate grid.

To sum up, a strong Algebra background is a must for this class.

**Curriculum**

We move into harder factorizations, complex algebraic fractions, polynomial

functions and all operations, including division, imaginary and complex numbers,

fractional and negative exponents, radical equations, composite and split functions,

matrices and systems of 3 or more equations, exponential and simple logarithmic

functions, series and sequences (both arithmetic and geometric,) and algebraic

statistics.

This is a rigorous curriculum covering many important topics.
